The beaches in South Maui’s Makena area are favored by locals for three reasons: They have few tourists, great sun, and excellent swimming.

The largest, and most popular, is the aptly named Big Beach (or Omeloa, depending on whom you ask). But if you’re feeling adventurous (and hate tan lines), take the short hike along the blackened, lava-encrusted ridge of the Pu’u ‘Ola’I Crater to the neighboring (clothing optional) Little Beach.

“It’s a Mecca for nudists,” Hoffman says. “Evening sunsets attract even more people who build fires, beat on drums, and dance the night away.”
