'The Voice's' Wardrobe Room: Inside the NBC Show's Dressing Room

"For inspiration on the show, I'm always looking for trim and adornment to make a store-bought piece pop," says Hirsh, who's been with the show since season one. "What I like to do because of our fast turnaround is take a piece and embellish it, elevate it for stage. I am constantly sourcing kind-of remnant pieces of fabric that we could cut out and use as applique or just finding great trims."

Although Hirsh doesn't style judges Gwen Stefani or Pharrell, their wardrobe is also placed in the same vicinity as the contestants' clothes.

From pumps to booties, the contestants are offered a slew of shoe options.

"I scour downtown as much as possible for all the gems — there's so many good places there," says Hirsh. "I tend to go downtown a lot because you can pick and choose pieces and elevate them and make them look a lot more expensive."

When asked why she's drawn her to dressing musicians (she's created onstage outfits for Kanye West and Rihanna), Hirsh shares, "I think it's having had a history in performance myself; I like flashy things to be honest with you. I do much better with the urban pop artists. It's more my wheelhouse than a bohemian vibe."

"I don't get to custom very often so when I do, I get very excited. I got to make a ballet tutu and this is the tutu part," says Hirsh of the pretty piece from last season (seen on the right). "Basically, in order to make this — I think this was made in 48 hours — what they had to do to sew this material together was hand-crack each one of these beads and thousands and thousands of beads in order to get the machine through it. It was just layers on top of layers. What we ended up doing was tea-dyeing all the applique to kind of make it a little bit more worn-looking. This is one of my most favorite things I've made for the show."

  • Adorned Pieces

"Most of these pieces here — I see them as bases that we can work from," says Hirsh of the pieces she'll find from Wasteland, Zara or Topshop. "A lot of the times, I'll buy necklaces with the intention of maybe using it or re-appropriating it as a shoulder piece or something like that."

While being on set can get hectic, Hirsh shares, "Every season I get together with my crew and we just talk about how to have a successful season and we're people first. The better off we are as people, the more we have to give to our job. One of my assistants is a yoga teacher so sometimes she'll lead stretches. I try to incorporate mindfulness into our environment and I think I've brought that over from the dance world."
